Zulum to build more houses for Unimaid staff, others

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’ of Borno State has announced a donation of bungalow flats to some  serving and retiring  Professor of   university of Maiduguri.

He also announced the intention of borrowing instate government to build additional housing estates for the staff of the university while pledging to continue to assist and support the varsity electricity and water supply problems .

The governor made announcement on Saturday during a  public lecture organized in honour of the outgoing Vice  Chancellor of University of Maiduguri, Professor Aliyu Shugaba as part of his  send off ceremony held at Muhammadu Idimi International Conference Hall.

He however directed the varsity authority to nominate three to four personalities within the university community that will liaise with the state government with a view to identify major problems of the institution and proffer possible solutions in how the state government can intervene towards addressing the  problems and challenges of the university.

Zulum commended the leadership style of the outgoing VC and level of infrastructural and academic projects, programmes , facilities, equipments , machines, and amenities among others executed, provided, installed, established and introduced  despite the notable challenges and threats the institution was confronted with without closure and interruption to academic activities including IPSS, ASUU and NASU issues.

According to him, despite the challenges and constraints the Vice Chancellor was facing in managing the affairs of the institution, his tenure has the best management of the university, infrastructural development, academic progress, and  leadership, particularly, the solar energy power supply of 12 and 20 KVA which have reached advanced stage of completion alongside some projects.

In his presentation of the public lecture titled,” Leadership challenges  in Nigerian Universities”, Professor Junrilla Dahiru Amin who is the Lecturer  of the Public Lecture dwelt on brief history of Nigerian universities both public and private and growth, capacity, lack of adequate and quality  infrastructures, study or academic , research and entrepreneurship among others.

He also spoke on under funding of universities, financial mismanagement and misappropriation, students and staff welfare and unionism , socio economic activities within the university community, quality .assurance of academic studies, training a d research of lecturers and other staff of the universities.

Professor  Amin identified lack of creativity and innovations and introduction or involvement of community services in the curriculum of the students to expose students graduates to participating in various community helps and services as well as lack of establishing cordial human relations between the unions and their leaders in campuses  and monitoring of conduct, attitude And behavior of staff and students applying negations and dialogues method.

He observed that level of leadership in most universities is low and managing emotions lack self awareness and self management hence social awareness except leaders to other emotions while highlighting on  leadership qualities, intelligence, and integrity among others.

The former VC of  Unimaid and Federal University Dutse. Well as Secretary, NUC , Professor J. D. Amin  noted challenges of managing a university include management of resources, staff, students, security, politics, welfare of staff and students, unionism in campus , religious and social.acticitiwa among others.

He added that managing basic infrastructures and providing electricity, water supply, classrooms, staff rooms and offices, lecture theaters and halls, conducting exams and punishment of offenders while suggesting the introduction of computer drive studies and social media technology to transform and train youths on new technology as powerful communication tools, artificial intelligence tools.

Prof. Amin urged students and  people to use social.media properly and  carefully and desist from writing rubbish or hatred speeches and needed to be controlled and managed by regulatory bodies to checkmate excess in the utilization of the new technology tools abd devices .

Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Bulama Mali.Gubio prayed for peace, unity and stability of the university while calling on the staff and lecturers of the varsity to continue to be good parents and guardians of the students .

The outgoing Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Aliyu Shugaba in his vote of thanks appreciated all for their support, contributions , prayers, wishes  and encouragement while thanking the management staff and students of the institution for their support and cooperation.
