The National Chairman of Nigerian Legion Major General Abdulmalik Jibril (rtd) has urged the Armed Forces veterans not to take part in the planned National strike scheduled to commence on Thursday August 1, 2024.
He made known the position of the Legion on Monday at a press briefing in Abuja. He said that in the light of the upcoming strike, it becomes necessary “to remind all veterans of their duty to remain non-partisan and uphold the discipline values instilled in them during their military service “
While acknowledging the right to peaceful protest enshrined in our Constitution,the Chairman emphasized that retired military personnel must remain above politics.
“It is crucial for veterans to understand that strikes are often hijacked by miscreants, seeking to exploit the situation and cause mayhem,” he said.
He explained that “veterans coming from a disciplined military background should not contemplate answering such calls, let alone take part in such act.”
According to the Chairman, “the military, whether in or out of uniform, are stabilizing agents and cannot be associated with destructive behaviours.”
The Nigerian Legion stands firm in its commitment to maintaining peace and order, he stated urging all veterans to continue upholding the highest standards of conduct.
“In these times, it is more important than ever, for veterans to lead by example and demonstrate their unwavering dedication to the nation’s stability and progress,” he added.
