The Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) Borno State chapter has distributed food items to the widows of deceased personnel who died in the line of duty and other vulnerable members in the State as part of the activities to mark International Women’s Day.
It was also aimed at bring succour to economic hardships the officers wives and others Including widows, orphans and vulnerable. as a result of the insurgency, economic hardship and hike in prices of foodstuffs generally.
The Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Yusufu Lawan who stated this on Friday at the Borno Police Command Headquarters said the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) used the occasion of the World International Women Day on Friday to reach out to widows and families of the personnel in the command especially families of those who died in active service.
“it is also a day to remember the contributions of our wives to building the homes,” Yusuf said.
He also commended the wife of the Inspector General of Police, Mrs Elizabeth Egbetokun for asking POWA to embark on the food distribution at this crucial period.
The Chairperson of POWA, Borno, State Chapter, Barrister Zara Ibrahim Mohammed said the World International Women Day is a global event celebrated on March 8 to promote equity for women.
She added that ,” if you invest in women help in accelerating growth in the society. It is the only way to fight against every forms of discriminations including economic discrimination. This is why we are distributing food items to our women today,”.
Zara further saiid,” this day is also observed;; to promote rights of women and the need for their voice to be heard. Mrs Ibrahim said a total of 100 women and families benefitted from the food distributions which includes the families of slain police personnel and others members of the families of police personnel. “
“Where each of the 100 beneficiaries will go home with a bags of rice, gallon of cooking oil, Macaroni and Spaghetti among others hence those who collected at the venue was just a symbolic presebtation.
“The rest will collect theirs at the central stories immediately while the 20 beneficiaries during the symbolic presebtation still have some items to collect in the store ,” Zara said.
