Nigerian billionaire and philanthropist Abdul Samad Rabiu has made a significant contribution to the University of Maiduguri by donating a N1 billion International Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ICIE).
The ICIE, built by Rabiu’s personal foundation, Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa (ASR Africa), aims to foster innovation, creativity, and practical entrepreneurship among students and the wider community.
Rabiu officially handed over the ICIE to the university during its 24th Combined Convocation ceremony. At the event, he also received an honorary doctorate degree in recognition of his outstanding contributions to national development, education, and entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
In his address, Rabiu emphasized that the ICIE is more than just a physical structure; it is a hub where ideas can flourish and entrepreneurs can develop their skills and knowledge. He expressed his deep belief in the transformative power of education and entrepreneurship, highlighting that the ICIE’s construction was a testament to this belief.
“In a world where economies are rapidly evolving and Nigeria strides towards renewed hope, centres like this are vital for development,” Rabiu stated. “They are the platforms for nurturing our future leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs. We must not just learn; we must act.”
Dr. Ubon Udoh, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of ASR Africa, further underscored the project’s significance, emphasizing its potential to stimulate economic and social growth, provide a global platform for innovative expression, and foster partnerships with leading international educational and innovation institutions.
The ICIE boasts a range of facilities to support innovation and entrepreneurship, including administrative offices, dynamic workstations, creative conceptual hubs, a cafeteria, an extensive library, and an exhibition hall. Additionally, it features a 150-seater hall designed for high-profile presentations and academic conferences.
Rabiu’s generous donation and the establishment of the ICIE represent a significant step towards empowering the next generation of Nigerian entrepreneurs and innovators. The center is poised to play a crucial role in driving economic growth and social development in the region.
