A labourer, James Idoko, was sentenced to five months in prison by an Upper Area court in Mpape, Abuja, on Tuesday for stealing winning tickets from a betting shop.
Idoko was convicted by Judge Marafa Mohammed after pleading guilty to robbery.
The prisoner was given the option of paying a fine of N30,000.
He also directed the prisoner to compensate the nominal plaintiff with N94,950. The prosecutor, Stanley Nwaforaku, previously told the court that the convict broke into a betting shop in Lugbe zone 6 and stole winning tickets worth N33, 600 and cash worth N61, 350.
According to Nwaforaku, the prisoner was found with one of the company tickets during the police investigation and admitted to the crime.
Nduka Nwafor of Tundun Wada, Airport Road Abuja, he said, reported the matter to the Trade More Division.
He said that the offense was in violation of the Penal Code’s sections 97 and 288.
