Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly explained his decision not to support Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the 2023 general elections. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Wike dismissed Obi’s candidacy, describing him as a “social media candidate” lacking realistic prospects of winning the presidency.
“He had no chance of winning the election; you people like this kind of social media candidate. I don’t do social media candidates,” Wike stated, emphasizing his preference for candidates with tangible chances of electoral success.
Wike elaborated on his political strategy, highlighting the importance of supporting candidates capable of navigating Nigeria’s complex political landscape. He noted that his decision to back President Bola Tinubu was based on Tinubu’s political experience and ability to overcome significant challenges during the election period, such as the naira redesign policy and fuel scarcity.
“In politics, it’s not always the best candidate who is likely to win. Nigeria today has many factors that come into play,” Wike added, underscoring the multifaceted nature of Nigerian elections.
