Update: Death toll Rises above 44,000 In Turkey-Syria Earthquake

The death toll from the earthquake in Syria and Turkey rose to more than 44,000 on Saturday, February 18.The head of Turkey’s disaster agency, Yunus Sezer, said rescue operations would be “largely completed” by Sunday night as the number of dead bodies has reduced to a handful as at press time.State news agency Anadolu initially reported on Saturday that three people were found alive nearly two weeks after the the 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit on February 6. But the agency later reported that one of them, a 12-year-old, had died.Photos showed rescuers placing a man and a woman on stretchers after the married couple and a child spent 296 hours under the rubble in the southeastern Turkish city of Antakya.The agency later reported three of their children had died including the 12-year-old.Teams on Friday pulled four people alive from the rubble, including a 45-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy, in the surrounding Hatay province.Rescues that were initially met with applause and relief, have in recent days been greeted more soberly.Officials and medics said that 40,642 people had died in Turkey and 3,688 in Syria from the quake, bringing the confirmed total to 44,330. The toll from Syria has remained unchanged for days.The quake in one of the world’s most active seismic zones hit populated areas as many slept, in homes that had not been built to resist such powerful tremors.

NSCDC arrests three for stealing Solar Batteries in Jigawa

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested three suspects in Gujungu community in Taura LGA of Jigawa State for allegedly stealing solar streetlight batteries.It was alleged that the suspects identified as Umar Adam Abdullahi (18), Kabiru M. Musa (25) and Shafi’u Hamza (25), “connived and stole solar streetlight batteries on Hadejia Road in Gujungu.”The command’s spokesman, Adamu Shehu, said an investigation revealed that there were a total of 130 solar streetlights on the major roads in the town out of which 23 had their batteries stolen.He said;“At the time of their arrest, they were in possession of two Roy 12V/150Ah solar batteries and a charge controller which were neatly removed from the streetlight trunks valued at N320,000.”The suspects confessed to the crime and would be charged in court after the investigation has been concluded.

Hon Adebo Ogundoyin, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, has been left bereaved after losing his mother, Mrs Justina Iyabo Ogundoyin.The news was announced on Sunday evening.Ogundoyin, who recently won his re-election, is currently representing Ibarapa East state constituency at the Oyo State House of Assembly.She died at the age of 63.The deceased was the fourth wife of the late Eruwa born philanthropist and business mogul, Chief Adeseun Ogundoyin.The speaker’s mother is survived by four children, including the Speaker.The deceased was until her death the Iyaloja General of Ibarapa land.

Doyin Okupe, a former Director General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, has reacted to the conviction of the former Nigerian Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, by a UK Court.DAILY POST had reported that Ekweremadu and his wife alongside Nigerian doctor Obinna Obeta, were found guilty of attempted organ harvesting of a Nigerian trafficked to Britain to provide a kidney for their ailing daughter.Reacting, Okupe, on his Twitter page, prayed that God will intervene and help the family.“My heart this morning goes out to Ekweremadu, his wife and unfortunate family. I cannot act as a judge in this matter.“But I pray that God of the universe who rules over the affairs of men will intervene in this sad development. God, help us in this time of trouble as you promised.”
