A soccer fan died after falling from the stands during the UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain, held in Munich on Sunday, June 8.
The incident was confirmed by UEFA to AFP’s German subsidiary, SID. The fan reportedly fell from the central tier of the stadium into the press box located in the lower tier during the first period of extra time.
Paramedics and police quickly responded to the scene in an attempt to assist, but the fan was later confirmed dead. A UEFA spokesperson described the incident as a “medical emergency” and said a supporter had “sadly” passed away during the match.
Both teams expressed their condolences following the game, which Portugal won 5–3 on penalties after a 2–2 draw.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente offered his sympathies during the post-match press conference. “I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us of what is important in life,” he said.
A Portuguese team representative said the death “casts a shadow on our victory today,” while Portugal coach Roberto Martinez called it “extremely sad news.”
The supporter is believed to have fallen from a height of around eight metres. The exact circumstances of the fall remain unclear.
