Department of State Services (DSS) official has informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that Simon Ekpa, a prominent figure associated with the Biafra separatist movement, is set to be extradited to Nigeria from Finland to face trial.
The DSS witness, identified as “PW-AAA,” testified during the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), stating that Ekpa would be brought back to Nigeria to face charges related to his support for Kanu and alleged incitement of violence.
Ekpa, who refers to himself as the “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), has been a vocal advocate for Biafran independence. He was detained by Finnish authorities in November 2024 on suspicion of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent, following allegations of orchestrating violent activities in Nigeria from abroad.
The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been investigating his activities, and his assets, along with those of his associates, have been frozen.
The Nigerian government has been actively seeking Ekpa’s extradition, citing his role in promoting separatist activities and inciting violence. President Bola Tinubu has commended Finnish authorities for their cooperation in this matter.
Justice James Omotosho, presiding over the court proceedings, has adjourned the trial to May 6–8, 2025, for the continuation of cross-examination and further developments.
