Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The high-level debates will run from September 22 to 28, with Shettima expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and unveil the country’s new climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
On arrival at JFK Airport, Shettima was received by top Nigerian officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar. He is scheduled to participate in side events, bilateral meetings, and roundtables focused on peace, security, and economic development.
Nigeria will also use the platform to push for Africa’s permanent representation on the UN Security Council, highlight investment opportunities, and strengthen its global leadership role. The Vice President is expected to address the Assembly on Wednesday.
