Senators, on Wednesday, eulogized the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as an incorruptible leader who served the country selflessly and shown kindness to those who came across him irrespective of tribe or religion.
The lawmakers, led by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, spoke while considering a motion on the demise of the late Buhari, sponsored by the Leader of the Red Chamber, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC Ekiti Central) during plenary.
In their resolutions, they observed a minute silence in honour of the deceased and commended the federal government led by President Bola Tinubu for accorded him a befitting state funeral.
The late Buhari, who was born on December 17, 1942 into a Fulani family in Daura, Katsina State, died on July 13 in a London clinic, United Kingdom after a protracted illness.
The Senate Leader while leading the eulogies, said as Nigerians mourn the late Buhari, “who has left an indelible mark in this nation’s history”, it’s imperative that the Senate “honours this great leader and patriot of our time.”
Bamidele pointed out that the deceased led “à successful and fulfilled life both as a gallant and courageous soldier, who rose to the peak of career as a military officer and also as a successful democrat, who ruled this country uninterruptedly for a two-term of eight years as president.”
He added that when the late Buhari became the military Head of State in 1984, “he adopted a very strict approach to governance with a strong emphasis on discipline, anti-corruption, and economic recovery through what became known as the War Against Indiscipline, WAI.
The Senate Leader noted that in recognition of his excellent performance as a Federal Commissioner of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Buhari was appointed by the regime of General Sani Abacha as the chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF in 1994 and held the position till 1998.
Àll the lawmakers who contributed to the motion, eulogized the deceased as a disciplined and incorruptible leader, who achieved so much for the people while serving in various public offices occupied while alive.
In his remarks, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio said Buhari’s life and leadership left an indelible imprint on the soul of Nigeria, stressing that the deceased was not just a soldier or statesman, but also a symbol of a discipline, restraint, and resolute belief in Nigeria’s potential.
He added that the late President was a humane and kind person during his lifetime, and ruled the country as both military and civilian leader with the fair of God Almighty.
