Senator Ifeanyi Uba (Anambra South).has protested the action of the Department of State Security (DSS) who on Thursday prevented him and other prominent Igbos from witnessing the trial of Nnamdi Kanu at the Federal High Court Abuja.
Kanu the leader of the proscribed Indegeneous People of Biafra (IPOB) who is facing a seven count amended terrorism charge before Justice Binta Murtala Nyako was brought to the Court on Thursday.
Senator Uba who filed a motion seeking permission of the Court to visit the defendant .in the custody of DSS wanted to witness the trial and move his motion but he was not given access to the court just like others including former governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife.
Protesting the treatment met out to him, Uba said that “as a serving senator of the federal republic, today, I have a case in court and I was to present myself in court regarding my motion.
“This morning, I came to the court from the Transcorp axis, it was blocked, I tried the Borno house axis, it was also blocked
“As a senator of the federal republic, I think I have the right to enter the court premises even if I have no business in the court.
“I want to plead with the authorities that this should not happen again. We live in a democratic entity called Nigeria, we are not in a wartorn country and anybody that is accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
“I am pleading that there should be sanity in the way and manner we go about this case.”
Ubah maintained that it was unfair for the authorities to bar Kanu’s kinsmen as well as lawyers from accessing the court.
“This is about giving him justice and showing that there is Justice in his trial.”
