Senate replaces Akpoti-Uduaghan with Bassey as c’ttee chairman

Senate, on Thursday, replaced the embattled chairperson of its Committee on Diaspora and Non-governmental Organizations, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP Kogi Central) with Senator Aniekan Bassey (APC Akwa Ibom North).

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio announced the change at the end of plenary session.

Akpabio declared that the replacement is with immediate effect.

It would be recalled that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had been on six months suspension for gross misconduct and violation of the Senate rules since March this year.

Last Friday, the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja in its ruling fined her N5million for contempt of court and asked her to apologize to the Senate in two national dailies and on her Facebook page.

Similarly, on Monday this week, another Federal High Court in Abuja upheld the Senate’s suspension of the Kogi federal lawmaker for violating the rules of the Red Chamber.

Both the Senate and Akpoti-Uduaghan said they would carefully study the Certified True Copy, CTC of the judgment to enable them take appropriate action.
