Security consultant, Dickson Osajie, has called for the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems in all correctional facilities across Nigeria to address the rising cases of jailbreaks. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Osajie made the call following the recent escape of 16 inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
Osajie stressed that CCTV serves as a psychological deterrent, noting that criminals are less likely to attempt escapes when they know they are under constant surveillance. He questioned how inmates could break out while officers were on duty, urging the establishment of control rooms in all prisons to monitor activities in real time.
He explained that for an inmate to successfully escape, he must pass through multiple security zones — from the inner holding area to the administrative block and finally the outer perimeter — and that proper technological monitoring would help detect and prevent such breaches before they occur.
