The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the Nigeria Police Force over allegations of contract splitting amounting to ₦6 billion and unauthorized sale of police barracks. The probe, initiated by Rep. Ibe Osunwa and others, mandates the Committees on Public Assets and Public Procurement to report back in six weeks.
Lawmakers allege that a ₦6bn contract was illegally split into 66 parts to evade procurement laws, while key police barracks in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano were sold without approval. They also raised concerns about over ₦50bn worth of contracts awarded to unqualified firms without evidence of delivery.
The Reps further noted that ₦2.9bn earmarked for the Safe School Initiative was awarded to a company allegedly lacking ICT qualifications. The investigation seeks to uncover the extent of procurement abuse and recommend necessary reforms or sanctions.
