The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has uncovered a suspected shrine believed to be a criminal hideout in Abak Local Government Area, arresting five individuals linked to armed robbery, cultism, and rape.
According to a press release issued in Uyo on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the operation was triggered by a complaint lodged on June 26, 2025. A man (identity withheld) reported that armed intruders broke into his room at an unnamed guest house in Abak, stole his valuables, and assaulted his female companion.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, directed officers to launch an investigation. Acting on intelligence gathered, operatives stormed the location at about 11:10 PM on July 30, 2025, and apprehended the suspects.
Those arrested are: Richard Edet Udo, Hope Unibong Anitie, Joseph Ibongidi, Christian Joseph Johnny, and Joseph Joseph. The raid also led to the discovery of alarming items, including two coffins filled with women’s sanitary pads, photos of various individuals, and other ritualistic objects believed to be used for fetish practices.
Investigations are ongoing to track down additional suspects connected to the gang.
