Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on Monday organised a send-forth ceremony for 23 Somali medical interns who successfully completed their one-year internship programme at the institution’s College of Medical Sciences.
The event, held at the Senate Chamber and chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adamu Ahmed, was graced by Somalia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Jamal Barrow, as Special Guest of Honour. The internship followed a February 2024 MoU between ABU and SIMAD University, Mogadishu, which brought the interns to Nigeria in October 2024.
Ambassador Barrow described the programme as a milestone for Somalia and Nigeria, stressing that the interns gained not only medical skills but also cultural bonds and friendships. He urged them to serve their communities back home, noting that their pioneering success had paved the way for future Somali students in Nigeria.
Prof. Ahmed reaffirmed ABU’s commitment to supporting African institutions and strengthening the ABU–SIMAD partnership. He assured that the university would monitor the progress of the interns in Somalia, while the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Prof. S. Shehu, confirmed that all the interns passed their examinations and would receive certificates.
