Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo, founder of David’s Christian Centre, has cautioned women against the cultural belief that men are solely responsible for their financial upkeep.
Speaking during a recent sermon, the clergyman emphasized that the Bible advocates hard work as the key to survival, not dependency on others. He said relying on men for basic needs is neither scriptural nor sustainable.
He explained: “That a man should take care of a woman is not biblical. What the Bible says is that he that does not work should not eat. Before you had a boyfriend or fiancé, how were you surviving?”
Okonkwo also urged women to raise their self-worth, warning against trading dignity for minor benefits from men. Using vivid metaphors, he said: “A boy that buys you puff puff, the way he will squeeze you like puff puff. If you don’t buy me popcorn, I won’t come. Then the way they will pop you like corn. They are disgracing your family.”
