OpenAI has announced plans to roll out parental controls on ChatGPT within the next month, in response to mounting concerns about the chatbot’s potential role in self-harm cases among teenagers.
The new feature will let parents link their accounts with their children’s, restrict functions like memory and chat history, manage chatbot responses, and receive alerts if signs of “acute distress” are detected during use.
In a statement on Tuesday, OpenAI stressed that these measures are “only the beginning”, adding that the company will continue refining its safety features with input from experts.
The goal, it said, is to make ChatGPT “as helpful as possible” while ensuring a safer digital environment for young users.
