Olympique Lyon has officially been relegated to Ligue 2 following a ruling by France’s financial watchdog, the DNCG. The decision comes after months of financial scrutiny, with Lyon failing to present a satisfactory recovery plan to address their mounting debts, reportedly around €500 million.
Despite the demotion, Lyon retains the right to appeal the ruling. The club is expected to submit additional documentation and possibly announce new financial strategies, such as asset sales or external investments, in a bid to reverse the decision and remain in Ligue 1.
This marks a historic low for one of France’s most successful clubs, with fans and former players expressing shock over the development. Lyon, a seven-time Ligue 1 champion, will now battle both on and off the pitch to salvage its top-flight status.
