In a significant move to address escalating security challenges, the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF), in collaboration with traditional rulers from the region, has officially endorsed the establishment of state police. This resolution emerged from a joint meeting held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, in Kaduna, attended by all 19 Northern governors and the chairmen of the respective traditional rulers’ councils.
The communique, presented by NSGF Chairman and Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, emphasized the forum’s unwavering support for the creation of state police as a means to tackle the region’s persistent security challenges. The governors and traditional rulers called on the National Assembly to expedite the legislative process required for the establishment of state police.
Beyond advocating for state police, the forum resolved to strengthen local security initiatives, establish interstate platforms for coordinated border surveillance, and collaborate with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to enhance support for federal security agencies.
This collective stance by Northern leaders reflects a growing national consensus on the need for decentralized policing to effectively address Nigeria’s complex security landscape.
