The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has announced a ban on all unauthorised boat loading points nationwide as part of measures to improve water safety. Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday while addressing recent concerns over recurring boat mishaps. He stressed that only NIWA-recognised and registered jetties would be permitted for passenger loading.
Oyebamiji ordered that all commercial boats must enforce the compulsory use of life jackets, display load lines and identification names, while unlicensed boats and operators would be removed from waterways. He further revealed that NIWA had expanded its water marshals from 80 to 350 personnel to monitor compliance and ensure passengers receive safety briefings before departure.
The NIWA boss also called for the passage of the Coastal Guards Bill to strengthen enforcement, reduce accidents, and protect lives. He added that the authority had deployed passenger manifests, installed marine buoys, cleared wrecks and aquatic waste, and intensified operator training to guarantee safer navigation.
