The Nigerian Legion made up of retired military personnel has been barred from wearing it’s unique military alike uniform following security concerns.
The National Council of the Nigerian Legion announced the immediate de-ranking of all officers of the Corps of Commissionaire from the rank of Commandant-General(CG),to Assistant Sector Commander(ASC).
This is contained in a four point Communique issued at the end of the 2024 National Council meeting in Abuja.
National council of Nigerian Legion said it took the decision as part of efforts of the federal government to rejig the security apparatus of the nation and maintain the integrity of the military.
The development becomes necessary due to National security concerns and the need to check regulatory non-compliance,incidents of impersonation, illegal possession of fire-arms and other unwholesome practices.
The Communique, signed by Secretary-General of the Nigerian Legion, Major V.O.Abiola(Rtd.) on behalf of the National Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Major-General Abdulmalik Jibril, says the directive takes effect from 6th June,2024.
Copies of the Communique were sent to the Minister of Defence,all Service Chiefs,the Inspector-General of Police and all other security agencies .It says any violator of this directive will be arrested and dealt with, in accordance with the laws of the land.
Meanwhile, efforts are at advanced level for the establishment of Nigerian Legion Microfinance Bank and many innovative programmes geared towards financial independence of the Nigerian Legion, in line with the Statutory requirements and obligations of the Nigerian Legion.
While thanking the federal government, it’s parent-body for the immeasurable support, the Council called for inclusion of the Nigerian Legion in the Annual Budgetary Allocation that will further facilitate fulfilment of the Legion’s goals and objectives of adequately catering for the social well-being of veterans and their dependants.
