Nigeria has emerged as the third most powerful military force in Africa, according to the 2025 Global Firepower Index. The country rose from its previous 4th position on the continent and climbed seven spots globally, moving from 38th in 2024 to 31st in 2025. This progress is attributed to increased investment in modern warfare equipment and strategic restructuring of the armed forces.
With approximately 230,000 active personnel, Nigeria’s military strength is now only behind Egypt and Algeria in Africa. The Nigerian Navy ranks fourth on the continent, boasting over 70 warships, while the Air Force continues to expand its fleet with new combat aircraft and drones. The country is also advancing in drone technology with indigenous production by institutions like AFIT and private firms.
Despite its progress, Nigeria still faces challenges in areas like submarine capability and air defense systems compared to North African powers. However, defence analysts say the recent improvements signal a commitment to enhancing national security and regional influence. Continued modernization could see Nigeria rise further in future rankings.
