Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called for the enactment of a law that would compel all government officials to patronise Nigerian-owned airlines when travelling on international routes. He made the proposal on Sunday during the ceremonial send-off of Air Peace’s inaugural direct flight from Abuja to London Heathrow Airport.
Keyamo explained that the proposed legislation, to be known as the Fly Nigerian Act, aligns with global practices in countries like the United States and India, where similar policies protect and promote national carriers. He emphasised that public officials should be required to fly Nigerian airlines first—provided they operate on the designated route—before considering foreign carriers.
The minister assured that his ministry was working with lawmakers to ensure the swift passage of the bill, describing it as a crucial step in strengthening Nigeria’s aviation industry and promoting economic patriotism. He stressed that the policy would not only support local airlines like Air Peace but also project Nigeria’s image globally through its aviation sector.
