Staff of the Federal High Court Abuja and High Court of the Federal Capital Territory under the umbrella Judiciary Staff UNion of Nigeria, JUSUN, who embarked on an indefinite strike action on Monday June 2, 2025 paralysed courts despite pleadings from CJN Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, for a two weeks grace to enable Federal Authorities address the workers grievances.
The workers action which was in total compliance with a strike notice issued on Saturday by the Union ,
the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria JUSUN to stay away from their respective offices paralyzed judiciary.
Our reporter who monitored the strike in Abuja the Federal Capital Territory reported that the main entrance gate to Federal High Court was locked with padlock as early as 7am and it remained locked barring personal, lawyer, litigants and any person gaining access into the premises.
None of the staff buses were seen in the premises , it means the buses don’t convey workers to work.
An official of JUSUN at the entrance gate politely turned back visitors , informed them that the court. staff are on strike over none payments of entitlements including salary increases,none release of the statutory allocations to the Judiciary based on the 2025 Appropriation in which the arrears of the Wage Award, minimum wage, and the 25%/35% salary increase have been captured.
Similar scenario played out at High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama District of Abuja and Court of Appeal Abuja yesterday.
Even a communique jointly signed by 12 principal officers of the Supreme Court Chapter of JUSUN led by the Chairman, Comrade Danladi Nda urging members at lower courts not to join the June 2 strike also could not save the situation.
Their pleading was anchored on the
CJN commendable efforts, “as we owe her our unwavering support in order to get the expected allowances and others paid”.
They however acknowledged the fact that “Lower sister courts position on the planned nationwide strike cannot be managed by us in the Supreme Court as it will put the CJN efforts in vain, jeopardy and swept under the carpet.
“We pray that our colleagues be calm and allow the efforts of the CJN to achieve meaningful results.
