Nigeria Customs, Federal Operations Unit Zone A, has seized $20,000 and 110,000 West African CFA francs (approx. ₦30.9 million) concealed in a smuggled Nissan Almera at the Seme border in Lagos. The driver reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled into the bush when Customs officers intercepted the vehicle around 11:45 pm on July 13, 2025.
During a formal handover at Customs’ headquarters in Ikeja, Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu emphasized that the seizure was part of Nigeria’s efforts to curb illicit financial flows and enforce legal currency-declaration limits—specifically the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
The funds have been officially transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where Assistant Director Shehu Mohammed praised Customs’ diligence. The EFCC will now carry out a comprehensive investigation and pursue prosecution of those involved.
