Former President Goodluck Jonathan has explained that his commitment to the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) is the main reason he no longer participates in active politics. Speaking at the 10th anniversary of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Abuja, he said WAEF membership demands strict non-partisanship, preventing him from engaging politically despite expectations from his associates.
He stressed the need to reform Nigeria’s political culture, condemning the growing “rascality” among political actors. Jonathan urged leaders to embrace responsibility and discipline, noting that many individuals enter politics without the training or preparation expected in other professions. He also expressed sadness over recent kidnappings in Kebbi State, drawing parallels with the Chibok incident during his administration.
Reflecting on the Foundation’s mission, Jonathan said its focus on democracy was inspired by his global reputation for strengthening electoral processes and peacefully conceding power in 2015. He added that the Foundation has, over the decade, driven initiatives promoting peace, democratic governance, and institutional reform across Africa.
