The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has demanded a total of N1.5 billion from Lagos-based law firm V-C Ottaokpukpu & Associates for certified copies of the national voters’ register and polling unit data covering over 93 million Nigerians. The amount, according to INEC, represents the cost of producing, certifying, and binding more than 1.9 million pages of records.
In a letter dated October 14, 2025, the commission broke down the charges to include N682 million for certified true copies, with the remainder covering photocopying and binding expenses. The request was made under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which allows citizens to access public records upon formal application and payment of prescribed fees.
The development has triggered widespread debate online, with many Nigerians questioning the transparency, affordability, and practicality of such a huge sum for public information. Others have urged INEC to consider digital access options to reduce costs and promote accountability in line with FOIA provisions.
