In a significant move to reinforce the operational integrity of the Nigeria Police Force, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has directed the immediate withdrawal of Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel from private individuals and VIP escort assignments nationwide.
Announced during a conference with PMF Squadron Commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the IGP emphasized that the PMF, as the elite tactical arm of the police, must refocus on its core responsibilities, including rapid response to riots, emergencies, and violent threats. He criticized the diversion of PMF operatives to non-core duties, stating that such practices have undermined the unit’s effectiveness and distorted its foundational mandate.
To address these concerns, the IGP unveiled a series of reforms:
• All PMF officers currently on unauthorized deployments are to be withdrawn immediately.
• PMF Squadrons are mandated to maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on standby at all times to support state commands during emergencies.
• Regular quarterly training sessions focusing on ethics, professionalism, and responsible policing will be instituted.
• PMF Commanders will be held accountable for the conduct of their personnel and are expected to lead proactively through regular inspections and mentorship.
The IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to restoring the PMF to its rightful role as a disciplined and dependable tactical unit. He called on all PMF Squadron Commanders to embrace these reforms as a professional and moral responsibility.
This directive comes in the wake of escalating security challenges across the country, including attacks by separatist elements, bandits, and terrorist groups. The IGP stressed the urgency for a united and cohesive front to effectively address these threats and safeguard national security.
