Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has said he would champion calls for a pardon for IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu if the separatist agitator expresses remorse and embraces peace. The cleric made the remark during an appearance on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, where he reacted to Kanu’s recent conviction.
Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment last week by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, after being found guilty on seven counts of terrorism. He has since been transferred to the Sokoto Prison, marking a new phase in his long-running legal and political battle.
Gumi insisted that reconciliation remains possible if Kanu renounces violent rhetoric and supports peaceful coexistence. He stressed that genuine remorse would prompt him to openly advocate amnesty for Kanu, despite the gravity of the charges.
