Tinubu announces his death, dispatches VP Shettima to UK

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally announced the death of Muhammad Buhari.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away in London.He died in London on Sunday in London hospital at about 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness.

A statement issued by the State House and signed by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga said President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the former President and leader of All Progressive Congress,APC, describing the moment as one of national mourning.

Tinubu spoken with the late President’s widow, Mrs. Aisha Buhari and conveyed his condolences.He directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.

“As a mark of respect for the departed leader, President Tinubu has ordered that flags fly at half-staff nationwide,” the statement said.

Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, had previously ruled the country as military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985. His tenure, both as a military and civilian leader, marked a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history.

Burial arrangements are expected in the coming days.
