The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has appointed Dr. Timothy Samaila, a consultant neurosurgeon, as the new Head of its Accident and Emergency Unit, following the conclusion of an internal investigation into a viral video that alleged the neglect of accident victims at the hospital.
The appointment was announced on Wednesday by the Medical Director, Prof. Saad Ahmed, in a statement titled “Findings of the Investigative Panel on Staff Response to Accident Victims at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja Following a Viral Video Seen on Social Media.”
The video, which surfaced online on June 6, showed accident victims left unattended outside the hospital, with staff allegedly claiming they lacked medical consumables and that it was not their responsibility to transport patients into the emergency unit. The incident triggered widespread outrage and a directive for a full investigation from the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako.
Prof. Ahmed said the facility took the matter seriously and acted in line with its complaint-handling procedures by setting up an impartial panel of inquiry.
“The panel thoroughly examined the incident, and appropriate measures have been taken based on its findings,” he stated.
The management reaffirmed its commitment to restoring public trust and ensuring that all patients receive timely and professional care in emergency situations.
