A 71-year-old Nigerian grandmother, Janet Damiro, has been dismissed from her cleaning job at the London School of Economics (LSE) following an incident involving a misplaced bracelet.
According to her family, Janet discovered the item during her shift in February and, intending to hand it in, unknowingly forgot it in her locker. The bracelet was later found untouched in her coin wallet after she was questioned, and she cooperated fully.
Janet’s daughter, Aina Damiro, has spoken out, describing the situation as an innocent mistake that has been unfairly portrayed as misconduct. The family insists her actions were not criminal but rather a lapse in memory, which should have been met with understanding, especially considering Janet’s years of dedicated service to the university.
They argue that the decision to fire her reflects a troubling lack of empathy for elderly staff, particularly women of colour in low-wage roles.
The university has not released a formal statement, but the case has sparked outrage online, with many calling for her reinstatement and a review of how institutions treat aging minority workers.
