Tensions boiled over in Kano on Sunday, July 6, as the long-standing tussle between the supporters of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II (16th Emir of Kano) and Aminu Ado Bayero (15th Emir) turned violent near the Emir’s Palace in Kofar-Kudu.

According to a statement from the Kano Emirate Media Team, supporters of Aminu Ado Bayero allegedly attacked the Kofar-Kudu Palace the official residence of Emir Sanusi II while he was away.
Sadam Yakasai, spokesperson from Sanusi’s camp, claimed the attackers:
Broke the palace gate, Injured palace guards, Damaged police vehicles.
Yakasai alleged that Emir Bayero’s procession deliberately passed through the palace road instead of the usual route from Koki to Nassarawa, a move seen as a provocation.
Bayero Camp’s Version of Events
An eyewitness from Bayero’s entourage disputed the allegations, insisting the clash was between “unknown miscreants” and Bayero’s supporters.
According to him:
The Emir was returning from a condolence visit in Koki and passed by the Kofar-Kudu Palace.
Hoodlums allegedly tried to block the road with dangerous weapons.
Supporters of Emir Bayero had to forcefully repel the attackers, clearing the way for the Emir’s safe passage.
There was no direct attack on the palace or palace guards, he claimed.

The situation escalated until security forces intervened, dispersing the crowd using tear gas.
