In a landmark move aimed at easing the financial burden on consumers, the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has announced a significant reduction in the Band A electricity tariff—from ₦209 to ₦160 per kilowatt-hour. The new rate will take effect from August 1, 2025, and applies to customers receiving a minimum of 20 hours of electricity supply daily under MainPower Electricity Distribution Ltd, the successor to EEDC in the state.
According to EERC, the revised tariff was determined using the 2024 multi-year tariff order methodology. While the cost-reflective rate was calculated at ₦112/kWh, federal government subsidies amounting to ₦45/kWh allowed for the tariff to be lowered further to ₦160. The commission emphasized that this decision was driven by a commitment to affordability and equitable energy access while maintaining financial viability for service providers.
The regulatory body also mandated MainPower to strictly adhere to service-based standards. This includes publishing daily feeder-level electricity supply data and maintaining promised service hours. Any deviation will result in an automatic downgrade of the affected feeder’s classification. Tariffs for Bands B through E remain unchanged under the current tariff freeze.
