Renowned Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has shed light on her consistent support for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, stressing that her stance is grounded in her vision for a better Nigeria and not based on emotions.
During an interview with Channels Television, the celebrated author expressed pride in publicly supporting Obi, emphasizing that her decision is a reflection of her patriotic duty and belief in what Nigeria can achieve under effective leadership.
“My support for Peter Obi is something that I do not hesitate to proclaim or talk about because I can tell you what it’s rooted in. My support for Peter Obi is rooted in my love for this country,” she said.
Adichie shared her desire to see Nigeria grow into a nation known for integrity and inclusiveness.
“It is rooted in my belief that with the right leader, we can be better than we are. We can have a country where people feel included, a country that is not corrupt and does not tolerate corruption. I think he’s also a person who doesn’t need to be president, he does it because he wants to be — and that’s a very important distinction.”
She also highlighted Obi’s humility and sincerity as key reasons for her trust in him.
“There are some people who want to become president because of their personal egos. For Peter Obi, it has never been about just him and his personality is very telling. He is one of the simplest men I have ever known and I have known him for many years.”
Adichie’s support for Obi dates back to the 2023 general elections when she addressed an open letter to then U.S. President Joe Biden, criticising the electoral process and reaffirming her backing of Peter Obi’s candidacy.
