It has been a tumultuous 1,079 days in Downing Street for Boris Johnson, but the scandal-hit prime minister is set to resign on Thursday, No 10 has confirmed.
He agreed to stand down following a meeting with the Tory 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady, and delivered an announcement to the nation shortly after.
The decision followed a trying few days for the prime minister after Rishi Sunak, Sajid Javid and dozens of junior ministers and aides announced their resignations following the Chris Pincher row.
Johnson said on Wednesday that he would not leave No 10 despite a mounting revolt against his leadership, which resulted in over 50 members of government resigning from their positions in less than 48 hours.
One month ago, Johnson’s authority was damaged by a confidence vote which saw 41% of his MPs try to oust him.
He insisted he had secured a “decisive” victory as Tory MPs voted by 211 to 148 in support of him, but the scale of the revolt left him wounded.
A new Tory leader is set to be in place by the party conference in October, a No 10 source said.
