The Project Coordinator of the Kogi State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, Chief (Barr.) Ladi Ahmed Jatto, OON, on Monday delivered a powerful lecture at the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), focusing on the crucial links between climate change, land degradation, and food security.
Speaking as the Guest Speaker at a special orientation program for the newly established Faculty of Agriculture, Barr. Jatto brought decades of experience into sharp focus. Her lecture titled “Exploring the Nexus between Climate Change, Land Degradation, and Food Security” emphasized the urgent need to adopt sustainable land practices to mitigate the negative impacts of environmental degradation on agricultural productivity and national food supply.
She highlighted strategies such as climate-smart agriculture, sustainable land management, policy reform, research and development, stakeholder collaboration, and effective water resource management as key pathways to securing Nigeria’s agricultural future.
Addressing the pioneer students, she urged them to rise to the challenge of food insecurity by becoming knowledge-driven innovators. “The food security of our nation rests on your shoulders. Unlike secondary school, the university demands initiative. You must research, work hard, and lead solutions for agricultural transformation,” she said.
The event also featured insightful presentations from the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Olufunmilola Alabi, who stressed the importance of academic diligence, and a keynote address by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, who commended Barr. Jatto for her dedication and for honoring the university’s invitation.
A vibrant Q&A session followed, where students engaged Barr. Jatto on the ACReSAL Project and sought deeper insights into the topics discussed. The program ended with a group photo session, capturing the enthusiasm and inspiration ignited among the students and faculty members.
