The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has debunked reports circulating on social media alleging that gunmen killed a civilian within the Ojo Military Cantonment in Lagos.
Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya , the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 Division Nigerian Army said in a statement that the social media report is misleading
He clarified that the incident did not occur inside the cantonment.According to the statement, the Division received a distress call on 18 October 2025 about a shooting near the Mammy Market abattoir gate, close to the Ojo Military Cantonment.
He said that preliminary investigations revealed that the attack was linked to suspected cult-related activities, which unfortunately resulted in the death of a civilian identified as Rilwan Adekunle.
The Army said its standby team responded swiftly to the distress call and evacuated the victim to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre — being the nearest medical facility — but he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
While expressing sadness over the loss of life, the 81 Division extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Lt. Col. Yahaya urged members of the public and the media to verify information from appropriate authorities before publication to avoid spreading misinformation.
