Argentina’s President Javier Milei is set to visit the United States on Wednesday, where he is expected to pursue a $20 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to boost the country’s central bank reserves.
During the trip, Milei will likely meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, where both leaders will receive awards recognizing their conservative values, according to Argentina’s Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein.
“We have nothing formally scheduled, but there will surely be a meeting,” Werthein told local news channel LN+ on Tuesday, adding that the IMF loan discussions remain a key issue in Argentina-U.S. relations.
Since taking office in December 2023, libertarian Milei has enforced strict austerity measures, which have slowed inflation but dampened consumer spending. The prospect of a new IMF loan—on top of Argentina’s existing $44 billion debt to the lender—has triggered peso devaluation fears, though Milei has rejected concerns over currency instability.
Werthein did not specify the exact date of the award ceremony at Trump’s Florida resort.
