As conflicts erupt worldwide, threatening global security and coexistence, citizens are rallying for peace. In May 2024, people from all continents joined hands for HWPL’s 11th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace and Peace Walk.
The event, organized by the UN-affiliated NGO Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), is aimed to foster a global culture of peace under the theme “Communication for Global Citizenship of Reconciliation and Tolerance.”
The main event kicked off on May 25th at the Peace Gate of Seoul Olympic Park, sponsored by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of Korea. In about 50 countries, Peace Walks were accompanied by various peace-building activities.
These global events included landmark walks unique to each nation, along with peace performances, video screenings, photo exhibitions, poster drawings, sports activities, bazaars, and volunteer opportunities. Tree planting ceremonies and “free hugs” initiatives further emphasized the spirit of unity and environmental well-being.
This annual event commemorates the 2013 proclamation of the Declaration of World Peace at the Peace Gate in Seoul Olympic Park, where 30,000 youth from around the world advocated for peace. The declaration outlines the roles individuals must play in achieving peace and calls for a united global effort.
At the 10th annual commemoration last year, Chairman Lee Man-hee stated, “Since we pledged to work together for world peace 10 years ago, we have been advocating for peace worldwide. We believe that peace should be taught at home and in schools, and that everyone should become messengers of peace.”
He further emphasized, “Everyone should unite under the banner of peace and work together to create a better world, leaving a legacy for future generations. This is our duty in the current era.”
Recently, HWPL issued a statement on the Israel-Iran conflict, highlighting the devastating impact on civilians. “Organizations worldwide, in alliance with HWPL as peace solidarity, urge Iran and Israel to stop acts of aggression immediately and to engage in dialogue to usher in peace,” the statement read.
