Americans have started to cast their votes this morning November 5, 2024 in the country’s 60th presidential election to precisely decide who will be the 47th president of United States of America.
President of the United States of America is very important office, widely held to be the most powerful job in the world, so the whole world is watching who will emerge the winner of the election.
One of the two foremost contestants: Ex- President Donald Trump of the Republican Party and Vice- President Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party will emerge winner in the tight race as both have been running neck-and-neck for weeks in key decisive states that would determined the winner.
Americans are also electing all 435 members of House of Representatives and the seats are up for grabs, along with 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate, which together will decide the membership of the 119th US Congress.
Thirteen state and territorial governorships and numerous other state and local elections are also taking place today.
Voters in 41 states will consider a total of 159 ballot initiatives. Ten states including Arizona, Colorado and Florida have abortion-related measures on the ballot. Florida, North Dakota and South Dakota are considering whether to legalise marijuana.
Campaign has been very tight and tough, characterised by polls, but none of the polls matter anymore, the winner of the presidential election will emerge at the close of ballot when the votes are counted.Once ballots are tallied, results start being released.
However, there are fear that certain factors may lead to delays in the release of today election result.
Narrow victories could mean recounts. In the key swing state of Pennsylvania, for example, a state-wide recount would be required if there’s a half-percentage-point difference between the votes cast for the winner and loser. In 2020, the margin was just over 1.1 percentage points.
Legal challenges are also possible. More than 100 pre-election lawsuits have already been filed, including challenges to voter eligibility and voter roll management, by Republicans.
Other scenarios that could cause delays include any election-related disorder, particularly at polling locations.
On the other hand, vote-counting has sped up in some areas, including the crucial state of Michigan, and far fewer votes will be cast by mail than in the last election, which was during the Covid pandemic.
Everything being equal, the winner of today presidential election will be known by tomorrow morning November 6, 2024 .
