Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has returned to Nigeria after a medical leave abroad. His wife, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, announced his return on social media with a single word: “Homebound.”
The post was accompanied by a photo of the governor seated on an aircraft. Details about the nature of his illness have not been disclosed.
In June, there were rumors that Akeredolu had died. The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, urged residents and the general public to disregard the speculation.
It was later revealed that Akeredolu was on medical leave abroad. The Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, confirmed that he had received a letter from the governor handing over the reins of office to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Aiyedatiwa urged the people of the state to continue praying for Akeredolu.
In August, Akeredolu’s Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, said that the governor was receiving treatment in Germany. It is unclear whether he spent the entirety of his medical leave in the European country.
Akeredolu’s return is a welcome relief to the people of Ondo State. He is a popular and respected leader, and his absence has been felt during his medical leave.
