Flight operations have resumed at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu following the successful completion of emergency repairs on the airport’s runway.
Domestic airlines, including Air Peace, Ibom Air, and United Nigeria Airlines, confirmed the resumption of scheduled flights to and from the airport, which had been temporarily shut down due to safety concerns related to the deteriorating condition of the runway.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced that the emergency repair works were completed ahead of schedule to ensure minimal disruption to travel plans, especially as the airport serves as a critical gateway for travelers in the South-East region.
FAAN’s spokesperson stated, “We commend the swift efforts of all engineers and stakeholders involved in the timely completion of the repairs. Safety is always our top priority, and we are pleased to inform the public that the runway is now fully operational and safe for flight operations.”
Passengers had earlier expressed frustration over flight cancellations and diversions to other airports during the repair period, but many have welcomed the news of the reopening.
Air Peace, in a statement, announced that it would resume full operations to Enugu starting Monday, with additional flights scheduled to meet the pent-up demand. Ibom Air and United Nigeria Airlines have also updated their schedules accordingly.
Travelers are advised to confirm their flight details with respective airlines and arrive at the airport early to accommodate any adjustments in travel procedures.
