…Promises to restore public trust, fight for Police welfare
The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ag. IGP Olatunji Ridwan Disu said on Wednesday on assumption of duty that the days of impunity in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) are over .
He said he will fight for an improve police welfare and restore public trust on police force.
He also said that three areas; professionalism , accountability and community partnership are key areas his administration would prioritize and build upon for public trust .
The Ag. IGP said this at the Force Headquarters, Abuja during his inaugural address as the 23rd Indigenous IGP shortly after taking over from the immediate past IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun who served between 19th June 2023 to 24th February 2026.
“I will say this plainly, so there is no confusion. The Days of impunity are over. The badge is a symbol of public trust. Anyone who treats it otherwise will face the full consequences of our disciplinary processes. This applies at every rank , without exception, including those closest to me.
“I will not ask the public to trust a service that does not first hold itself accountable. We will strengthen our internal oversight mechanisms, make our processes more transparent and mean what we say when we speak of the rule of law.”
The Ag. IGP informed officers of the NPF that he will “demand the best” from them. According to him, “I will demand the best from you, because the people we serve deserve nothing less. Integrity, compassion and courage are not optional qualities. They are the job.
“But I make you this promise in return, I will fight for your welfare, your dignity and the conditions you need to serve effectively. You will not be asked to perform miracles with nothing. Leadership in this service, from this day forward, must be visible, accountable, and worthy of being followed.”
Disu also asked the citizens for one thing which is “partnership.” He urged citizens to “report crime, engage with local officers and hold the Force accountable.
In his words, ” Hold us accountable when we fall short and encourage us when we get it right. We are not your adversaries. We are your neighbors in uniform, and your safety is the only measure by which our success should be judged.
“My doors will be open, my ears will be attentive, but my commitment to transforming this service into one that every citizen can trust, and every officer can be proud to serve in will not waver.”
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him and assured him that he will neither squander nor take it lightly. “I am committed to nurturing and upholding it until it fully aligns with the President’s expectations and aspirations of Nigerians,”he said.
Disu also acknowledged with sincere gratitude the efforts of all former IGPs who proceeded him. He thanked them for their passion, professionalism and dedication. And essentially for the foundation they laid and the structures they worked very hard to build.
The newly appointed Acting Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu was born on 13th April, 1966. He hails from Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State. His educational qualifications include: MSC Entrepreneurship, NOUN (2023); MSC Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology, LASU (2022); Advanced Diploma in Forensic Investigation and Criminal Intelligence, UNILAG (2019), MSC, Public Administration, Adekunle Ajasin University (2010), PGD International Relations and Strategic Studies, LASU (2000) and B.A English (Education), LASU (1990).
He joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on 18th May, 1992.
He is bringing to the office a wealth of operational, investigative, intelligence, and administrative experience garnered over decades of distinguished service in various strategic positions and capacities held across the country.
Until his appointment on Tuesday, he was Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.
Some of his other pasted positions held include, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG); Special Protection Unit (SPU), Force Headquarters, Abuja; Commissioner of Police, FCT Police Command, Commissioner of Police (CP), Rivers State Police Command, Commissioner of Police, Admin and Intelligence, Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB); Deputy Commissioner of Police Head, Intelligence Response Team (IRT)
Others are Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Lagos, 2015 – 2021; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, Rivers State; Officer in Charge, Anti-Kidnapping, Rivers State; Officer in Charge, Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ondo State/Oyo State, 2011 – 2014; Divisional Police Officer, Ondo State, 2007 – 2013; Officer in Charge, Training, Nigeria Police Peace-Keeping Department; Directing Staff, Nigerian Police Academy, Kano; Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to former Governor Lagos State and Officer in Charge, Anti-Fraud, State Criminal Investigation Department, Katsina, 1993 – 1998.
Ag. IGP Olatunji Disu is a member of the following associations and bodies: International Academy of Forensics; National Association of Investigative Specialists, United States of America (NAIS), Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM); and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
He successfully led the first-ever Nigerian Police contingent to the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) to quell the crisis in Darfur, Sudan, in 2005.
He was once National Chairman of the Nigeria Police Judo Association and has won his third black belt in Judo, with many other medals, including a silver medal at the 2022 US Open Judo Championships.
His track record of leadership, professionalism, and dedication to duty underscores his readiness to steer the affairs of the Nigeria Police Force at this critical time.
At the handover ceremony Disu said the Nigeria Police Force expressed profound appreciation to the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, for his invaluable contributions to the growth, modernisation, and strengthening of the Force.
The new Ag. IGP reassures officers and men of the Force, stakeholders, and the general public of his commitment to consolidating on existing reforms, enhancing internal security, strengthening community partnerships, and advancing the Force’s mandate of protecting lives and property in line with global best practices.
He pleaded for continued support and cooperation of the public as the new leadership works to deepen professionalism, discipline, and service delivery.
