Aisha Buhari Says ‘Other Room’ Joke Was Funny But Told on The Wrong Stage

Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has described her late husband Muhammadu Buhari’s infamous “other room” remark as a joke that missed its moment, admitting it was made on the wrong stage despite being humorous within their private understanding.

The comment, delivered during a 2016 press conference in Berlin alongside then German Chancellor Angela Merkel, sparked global backlash after Buhari said his wife “belongs to my kitchen, my living room and the other room,” following her public criticism of his government.

According to a new biography by Dr Charles Omole, Aisha Buhari acknowledged that while they joked about the line at home, irony travelled poorly in the international arena, forcing her to clarify repeatedly that she knew her place in power and never hesitated to occupy it when it mattered.
