The Network of Journalists on Indigenous Issues (NEJII) has urged President Bola Tinubu to address long-standing economic, social, and political grievances of Abuja’s original inhabitants (AOIs).
The call comes as part of efforts to ensure the rights and welfare of the FCT’s indigenous communities are protected.
In a letter to the presidency on Wednesday, signed by Adewale Adeoye and Usman Dogo, NEJII noted that their appeal followed a week-long tour of over 800 indigenous communities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The network is advocating for the creation of a separate “Abuja state” and compensation measures for the natives.
