The Federal Government of Nigeria, on Friday, November 21, 2025 ordered the immediate closure of 41 Federal Unity Colleges in the country following worsening security situation in the northern regions.
A circular from the Federal Ministry of Education signed by Hajiya Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education, on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa,
It directed urgent shutdown following surge in violent attacks, kidnappings, and mass abductions targeting schools, including recent incidents in Kebbi and Niger States where armed bandits abducted students and staff, that led to fatalities.
The ministry’s circular stressed the importance of preventing any security breaches and instructed principals of the affected schools to ensure strict compliance with the order without delay.
The 41 Unity Colleges affected are primarily located in North-West, North-East, and North-Central Nigeria, regions most affected by banditry and terrorist activities.
Some of the schools closed are FGGC Minjibir, FTC Ganduje, FGGC Zaria, FTC Kafanchan, FGC Daura, FSC Sokoto, FGC Ilorin, and FGGC Potiskum, among others, located in geographic area where insecurity appears not to have abated despite efforts by security agencies.
