The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed 491,000 tablets of Tramadol 225mg, with an estimated street value of ₦91 million, at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital dump site.
The tablets, classified as controlled drugs due to their high potential for abuse, were intercepted and handed over to the agency by the Nigerian Customs Service, Kano/Jigawa Area Command.
According to NAFDAC’s Kano State Coordinator, Shaba Mohammed, the drugs were intercepted on May 28, 2025, at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, following an intelligence-led operation.
The tablets were concealed in a consignment disguised as spare parts but were flagged during routine inspection and subsequently seized. He reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to sanitizing the pharmaceutical supply chain across the country.
In her remarks, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, commended the synergy between security agencies in combating drug trafficking.
She warned against the continued smuggling of illicit pharmaceuticals, describing it as a serious national security threat and a major contributor to youth addiction and violent crimes. The agency vowed to remain relentless in the war against counterfeit and unregistered medicines.
